Before this week, I had no idea what a polar vortex was or the level of fear it could instill in me. It’s no secret I hate winter, but for the first time in my life, I was literally afraid to leave the house because of the temperature. When you wake up to find it’s three degrees outside, and the wind chill makes it actually feel like -20, panic sets in completely.  The only thing I wanted to do was…

roasted butternut squash

Now that we’ve sufficiently addressed my confounding attitude toward pumpkin, let’s move on to the winter squash for which I am certain of my fidelity. That would be the economical, practical, and most importantly flavorful,  butternut squash. Like pumpkin,  butternut squash is orange and in season during the cooler months, but as far as I’m concerned that’s where the  similarities end. maple pie-2

I suppose every season is pie season, but once November rolls around, it’s no holds barred. Everyone is baking pies. I’m sure you have your holiday favorites lined up. My favorite is sweet potato (of course). But this year, let’s experiment. Try something new.

He has to exist. She’s out there somewhere. Even if it’s impossible to fathom, just know there are people out in the world who don’t like sweet potatoes.  And then there are people like me, who can’t imagine life without the orange-hued superfood. Sweet potatoes are “my thing.” I’ve prepared them dozens of ways and I’m constantly coming up with new ways to incorporate them in my diet.  Whether souped up for a stew, styled for a sweet side dish…

vegan banana pumpkin bread on plate

Remember those paper fortune tellers you used to make back in the day? Well, this past Sunday a few of the kids in my church school class decided to make paper fortune tellers out of offering envelopes. How clever. Right in the middle of the lesson on the Good Samaritan, there they were, hard at work folding and shaping and manipulating to their heart’s content. Until I caught them red handed.  One student was surprised  I knew what the little paper…
